Background of the Study

Antenatal care (ANC) is essential for improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes. The WHO (2024) recommends at least four ANC visits during pregnancy to monitor fetal development, manage complications, and provide essential health education. Despite these recommendations, many pregnant women in Adamawa State do not utilize ANC services due to factors such as lack of awareness, cultural beliefs, and socioeconomic constraints (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

Maternal health education programs aim to address these barriers by providing pregnant women with information on pregnancy care, nutrition, and danger signs. These programs are delivered through community health workers, hospital outreach programs, and media campaigns. However, the effectiveness of maternal health education in increasing ANC utilization in Adamawa State remains unclear.

Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing efforts to promote maternal health, ANC utilization remains suboptimal in Adamawa State. Many women do not seek care early in pregnancy, increasing the risk of complications such as preeclampsia and neonatal mortality (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

Limited access to maternal health education and misconceptions about ANC services contribute to this problem. This study investigates the impact of maternal health education on ANC utilization, identifying key barriers and potential interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of maternal health education in Adamawa State.
  2. To examine the relationship between maternal health education and ANC utilization.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving maternal health education programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of maternal health education among pregnant women in Adamawa State?
  2. How does maternal health education influence ANC utilization?
  3. What strategies can enhance maternal health education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Maternal health education has no significant impact on ANC utilization.
  2. Socioeconomic factors do not significantly influence ANC attendance.
  3. Strengthening maternal health education will increase ANC uptake.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on pregnant women in Adamawa State. Limitations include challenges in measuring education impact and potential biases in self-reported data.
